Salient features of pet dog insurance policy
Market value
The price generally paid for an animal of the same age, breed, pedigrees, and sex and breeding ability at
the time the insured gets his dog.
Veterinary fees
Under this section the company is liable to pay the insured the cost of veterinary fees (excluding the cost
of medicine provided and pathological tests conducted by the attending Veterinary Surgeon) for treatment of the insured dog
received during the policy year for an illness or injury. This cover is optional and is available on payment of additional
premium. Maximum liability of the company under this section is limited to 20% of the S.I. under Section 1. Maximum fees payable
to the vets per consultation is limited to Rs.200/- for non surgical cases and actual fees, subject to the maximum liability
of the company under this section ,for surgical cases.
Under this section the insured shall have to bear 20% of each and every admissible claim
The amount vets in general or referral practice generally charge.
Third Party Liability-
This section indemnifies the owner of the dog as a Private Individual for liability at law to pay compensation to Third
Party for accidental bodily injury to any person or animal or damage caused to property of any third party by his dog to the
extent of Rs.100000/- in any one accident and/or during any period of insurance. The policy also indemnifies all costs and
expenses of litigation incurred with written consent of the company subject to the overall limit of the Sum Insured under
this section
Theft or straying-
If the dog is stolen or goes missing during the policy year and is not recovered or does not return, the company will pay
to the insured the Market Value of the insured dog prior to theft/straying or the Sum Insured under this section whichever
is less.
Advertising and rewards-
The cost of advertising if the dog is stolen or goes missing during the policy year and the reward the insured has offered
for the recovery of his dog will be paid by the company provided the matter of advertisement and declaration of reward is
done after receiving the consent of the company. Maximum liability of the company under this section will not exceed 25% of
the Sum Insured set out under Section-4 of this policy
Death from Illness-
If the dog of the insured dies or has to be put to sleep by a vet during the policy year as a result of an
illness, the company will pay to the insured the Market Value of the insured dog prior to illness or Sum Insured under this
Section whichever is less.
Death from Injury-
If the dog of the insured dies or has to be put to sleep by a vet during the policy year as a result of injury
caused by an accident ,the company will pay to the insured the Market Value of the insured dog prior to injury or Sum Insured
under this section whichever is less.
Boarding kennel charge
The cost of boarding the insured dog at a licensed kennel up to a maximum limit of Rs.100/-per day or the cost subject
to a maximum of Rs.75/- per day towards the cost of someone who does not live with the insured and looking after his dog while
the insured is in hospital during the policy year, will be reimbursed by the company .The maximum Sum Insured under this section
is limited to10% of the S.I under Section 1 in one policy year. This cover is optional and will be available on payment of
additional premium. This cover is subject to some exclusion mentioned in the policy.
Holiday cancellation-
The company will pay to the insured any travel or accommodation expenses which the insured cannot recover
if he has to cancel or cut short a holiday out of station during the policy year because his dog:
- Goes missing while the insured is away; or
- Is injured or shows the first clinical signs of an illness while the insured is away or up to 5 days before the insured
leaves for the holiday out of station and needs immediate life saving surgery.
Maximum S.I. under this section is limited to 25% of the S.I. under section 1 in any policy year. This cover
is optional and can be taken out on payment of additional premium.
Dog shows risk
On payment of additional premium the company will reimburse the insured the loss of show entry fees subject to the maximum
limit chosen by the insured if the insured dog is unable to attend the "Dog Show" due to incapacity of the insured dog resulting
from accident or disease or due to death caused by perils covered under the policy .The incapacity or death of the dog and
the causes thereof must be certified by the attending veterinary surgeon. The reimbursement of fees is also subject to production
of documentary evidence from the Kennel club with which the dog has been registered at the time of death. The limit of reimbursement
will be the actual expenses incurred by the insured towards entry fee in the Dog Show or Rs.1000 /- whichever is lower.
General Exclusions applicable to all sections
- Any dog less than 8 weeks old.
Claims Procedure
Unless the insured is claiming for vet’s fees, he must let the company know of any circumstances, which
are likely to lead to a claim.
The insured must follow the procedures set out in the section under which he is claiming.
Market Value: Market value of the dog will be determined by a qualified and competent Veterinary
surgeon considering the breed, age, pedigree and type. The Market value will be based on actual commercial value or Breed
value and no sentimental value will be added.
SUM INSURED: Sum Insured under Sections 1,2 & 4 will be either Purchase Price or Market Value
of the dog whichever is higher. Sum Insured under other Sections are based on the Sum Insured of the aforesaid sections.
Age Group: Dogs of minimum of two months and maximum 8 years (6 years for select dog breeds).
Registration of dogs: The dogs, which are either registered with the local administrative bodies
or with, kennel clubs or societies for animals only will be considered for insurance coverage.
Identification: All dogs proposed for insurance should be suitably identified by any or more of the
following methods:
i) Use of Microchips ii) Metal ear tagging iii) Nose Print iv) Cold branding v) Photographs
